Keep It Clean - The Living Room

Life truly begins after you have your house in order.
— Marie Kondo

Hello readers! I’m back with the second part of Keep It Clean: a series about the simple things you can do to keep your environments clean and enjoyable to be in. My first post provided you with quick tips on how to maintain your kitchen space. This post will be all about making sure your living room stays tidy. Since moving into my apartment a few months ago, I’ve been spending most of my time in my living room. It’s where I do most of my studying, host visitors, play with my cat, and sometimes eat meals. The living room also ends up the dustiest of all the room in my apartments thanks to the huge air conditioning unit on the wall looming above it all.

Because of this, it’s also the room that I tend to spend the most time cleaning up. The area is so big and open (and is often the center of attention) I feel like it tends to appear in need of being tidied up a lot more than any of my other rooms. So, in the spirit of that, I’ve come up with a few simple tips I’ve picked up along the way on how to keep your living room clean. Remember, each tip can be and should be altered to fit in with your cleaning routine. Good luck!

Tips for the Living Room

  • Sweep, vacuum, or mop the floors regularly - your living room floor should be kept dirt and debris free. Invest in a good vacuum cleaner for your carpets/rugs and a Swiffer. When using my Swiffer, I use both the wet and dry disposable cloths (going over my floors first dry to pick up dust bunnies and then wet). I recommend giving your floors clean at least once a week to start with! Get them down on your cleaning schedule and don’t forget that they deserve love too even when they’re hidden under a rug or piece of furniture.

  • Pay attention to surfaces - Make sure to keep your surfaces clean by using a cloth or duster to keep your surfaces looking gorgeous. Again, Meyers Clean Day tends to be a great option for this, as it’s helpful on any surface. If you tend to eat in your living room sometimes as I do, don’t forget to wipe down any surface you put your food and drinks on. My wooden and glass coffee table gets really heavy use, so I tend to both dust and clean the glass top at least every other day. Investing in a few coasters for your coffee tables can also do a world of good for your wood surfaces.

  • Invest in some great storage options - Everything in your living room deserves to have its place. When it comes to blankets and throw pillows, finding great storage options for them can free space up. I change up the pillows and blankets on my couch and chairs for every season/holiday and found a really cute basket to hide them in. It’s large enough to fit everything and also serves as a statement piece. If you’re a pet-owner and have way too many toys and pet products, a storage container or basket may also be really useful for getting things out of the way.

  • Pick out a few scents to put on display - In the mornings and evenings, I’m always burning a candle on my coffee table. It’s a great way to set the mood and make sure my environment always smells amazing. As mentioned in my last post, I gravitate towards more fresh and floral scents in my kitchen but in my living room, I tend to have fun finding scents that match the season and holidays. Having a good scent in your living room can also be a conversation starter when entertaining guests! It’s always one of the first things visitors mention when they step into my living room. Feel free to switch up your scents and have fun with them!
